Podcast: 2005 Word of the Year

Rest of the world catches up with techies

The Oxford University Press, publishers of the New Oxford American Dictionary, has selected podcast as the Word of the Year for 2005. Erin McKean, editor in chief of the New Oxford American Dictionary, said: "Podcast was considered for inclusion last year, but we found that not enough people were using it, or were even familiar with the concept. This year it's a completely different story. The word has finally caught up with the rest of the iPod phenomenon."

Last yeat it was the word BLOG. I think dictionaries are to be rewritten, as histories are being rewritten. No?

Jaimie: Oxford University Press defines podcast as "a digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar program, made available on the Internet for downloading to a personal audio player."

In October, I featured a story on a Missouri school that has integrated this new technology into its curriculum.
Here is the link to Podcasting enters the classroom. Hopefully, this will help you to understand what podcasting is all about. The story also carries a link to the teacher's blog. The blog posts podcasts for the listening public. Hopefully, by seeing how this school uses podcasts, you will better understand how it works. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Shirazi: You are a walking encyclopedia! Is technology taking over the world? :-)
Thanks for this information.

Jaimie, your district is not alone. All school districts are facing financial challenges. However, funding for technology is available through many corporations and nonprofit educational programs. Hopefully, your district will be fortunate enough to take advantage of these enhanced learning opportunities.

Letter Shredder: Good for Manila! I think many of us are still learning the concept of podcasting. Lots of people have yet to hear the term, but they will eventually catch up - only to have some new technology surface. :-)
