An unusual parent-teacher encounter

It was a busy day for my daughter, "Elizabeth." Today my grandson turned six. My daughter, his mother, paid a visit to his school after work, taking cupcakes for the whole kindergarten class. Of course, she was an instant hit with the kids. Let me pause for a moment to let you know that Elizabeth is black, and she lives in the suburbs.

When the party was over, and it was time for the students to go to gym. My daughter started packing up to go home. The teacher, Ms. Endicott, asked my daughter if she had met the gym teacher. My daughter had not, so the teacher encouraged Elizabeth to walk with the class to the gymnasium.

Along the way, Ms. Endicott asked my daughter if she had any more children. "No," Elizabeth said.

The teacher, now wearing a big smile, said, "Oh, you must meet our gym teacher, Mr. Johnson. He's very nice."

My daughter said, "I'm sure he is, but I'm sure he's very busy. Maybe another time."

Ms. Endicott persisted. "Oh, no! It will only take a moment. Besides, he's really, really nice." By the time my daughter's thinking this is a bit awkward.

One little blond-haired girl overheard the conversation, and cheerfully jumped into the conversation. "Yeah, Mr. Johnson is really nice. He's black!"

By this time, everyone had reached the gym, and my daughter met Mr. Johnson. She said that Ms. Endicott stood back and nodded her head as the gym teacher and my daughter exchanged pleasantries.

"Mom, it was so weird," Elizabeth told me later. She had never had a teacher try to set her up with a guy before.

My response: "Ewwwwe!"

Nice new neighbors

We had just moved onto a new street when or new neighbor suggested we go to http://www.tvbydirect.com/ to set up our satellite service. They actually came to our front door with some fresh-baked cookies to welcome us to the neighborhood when we started chatting. I was so grateful that at our new house we would have good neighbors.

I know that these days people pretty much keep to themselves and don’t care much about who lives next door as long as they aren’t being bothered. On our old street we had the worst neighbors ever. They would always leave trash in their yard and be really loud and inconsiderate. I think this experience traumatized me a little bit so I’m extra happy that I know we have people close by we can talk to and ask for advice.

It makes life so much more pleasant when people around you are nice. We had hoped this would happen when we decided to move but half thought that inconsiderate people have started to be the norm. We were pleasantly surprised by our helpful new neighbors!

Artist of the computer kind

Who would have thought that living here would inspire me to become an artist? Well, not a paint and canvas kind of artist but the graphic design kind – I love owning my own business and working for myself! I can only imagine what my life would be like if I still had to sit in a cubicle all day and stare at a computer screen to make money…I can’t believe I ever lived that kind of life!

I got wireless internet Seattle to help me communicate with my customers from my home office and I met with an accountant to make sure I had all the logistics under control before I got started. I thank God everyday I moved here and met Sam who encouraged me to follow my dreams because with his support, both emotional and financial, I never would have been able to do this for a living. I can’t imagine doing anything else and I’m happier than I’ve ever been so I can be grateful for everything I’ve got in life!

Nine states to share early learning grant

Studies show that youngsters who participate in strong early childhood programs have a much greater chance of succeeding in their academic and professional careers. Public schools are trying to stay ahead of the game.

Nine states will get a chance to jump-start their early childhood initiatives, thanks to $500 million in federal grant money. The funds are available through the U.S. Department of Education's program, Race to the Top. In this initiative, states compete for federal dollars to create programs that make schools more effective. The $500 million will be shared by the following states:

California
Delaware
Maryland
Massachusetts
Minnesota
North Carolina
Ohio
Rhode Island
Washington

A long-term study by the Chicago Public Schools found that "children who attended a high quality early childhood program were more likely to graduate from high school, more likely to stay out of jail and less likely to abuse drugs or alcohol than students who did not attend such a program."

Being my own boss is something I always thought I might do but I had no idea how it would actually come to fruition. I never had a ton of extra cash, and it took me decades to figure out what I was good at. But look at me now – I own my own graphic T-shirt company, and I’m actually turning a profit!

I’ve had to learn as I go about stuff like bank card processing and human resources and tax laws – you don’t learn about any of that stuff when you don’t go to college (and I’m not so sure you learn it in college, either!) -- but I think I’m pulling my weight and starting to feel more confident about being a good businessperson. I like having total control over what I put out there.

I try really hard to be a good boss. I know how important it is to keep morale high and people interested in working for you. That’s why I finally struck out on my own!

Why does it seem like every time I meet a great guy there’s something wrong with him? I’m sorry to be all Debby Downer about relationships, but it seems like I just can’t catch a break!

The last guy that I was talking to seemed like he had it all: good looks, a great job, great sense of humor. Only to find out 6 months in to our relationship that he was married! I guess that you’re going to tell me that I should have known, but he was honestly so good about hiding his relationship with his WIFE!

I decided that Chicago was not the place where I was going to meet an honest man - so after that last straw I’ve decided to pack up my mid-western self and move to Texas! My mom has been helping me get everything ready- setting up all of my providers for when I arrive so I have electricity and water (a great informational website is: WWW.TEXASELECTRICITYPROVIDERS.COM/ ) when I get there.

I’m so excited! Maybe there I’ll meet an honest man with cowboy boots!

Are guidance counselors facing burnout?

At most local high schools, counselors used to check in with students to make sure they were taking the right classes and had the grades they'd need to graduate on time. It's not that simple anymore. High school counselors across the country face growing caseloads. At the same time, students need their help more than ever -- whether it's applying to college or meeting more complex graduation requirements.

The American School Counselor Association recommends a student-to-counselor ratio of about 250 to 1, but it's nearly twice that at many high schools. In addition, counselors have to help students with a growing array of personal struggles. Many are homeless or living in poverty. Shopping for that special day

I'm a mom with two kid. Holiday shopping, especially for Easter or Valentine's Day, involves buying candy and maybe a small toy for them. I try to remember my husband and find something that he'll really enjoy, but money is tight and often we choose to do something together for the holiday. Instead of surprising each other with flowers or chocolates, we often go out to dinner together.

It's nice to have a date night with just the two of us; doing this allows us to reconnect. Parenthood doesn't often allow for alone couple time, so for Valentine's Day we really try to have a night out together. I usually surprise my kids earlier in the day with their gift. My kids are great and are appreciative of presents that they receive. This Easter I may surprise my husband with a small, affordable present. I was thinking maybe a CD or a movie. I usually shop at Target or Wal-Mart for these types of gifts. I may look for a romantic movie or CD to celebrate the spirit of the holiday.

I'm glad I added my home security alarm to my home a year ago. I always set the alarm from http://www.Allhomesecurity.com before we leave the house to go to dinner and I can feel confident that our home is in safe hands.

Involved parents = student success

All parents want their children to succeed in school. Research reveals that children whose parents are involved in their kids' education are more likely to succeed. But for many parents, it is hard to know how or when to start.

Today's parents work long hours, extra jobs and must handle a host of other responsibilities. Resources such as Parent Information Resource Centers (PIRCs) offer assistance in many states. Many community centers also provide help. By all means, do not overlook your child's school, which can provide a wealth of information.

Education starts at home. Kids spend most of their waking hours outside of school. Rose Jackson-Beavers, an author and director of parent services for the Parent Engagement and Empowerment Center in St. Louis, believes that even busy parents can take an active role in their child's education. According to Jackson-Beavers, the benefits of ongoing parent involvement are substantial.

"A parent's opportunity to get involved in their child's education doesn't end the moment that child walks into the classroom," said Jackson-Beavers. "Studies show that children with involved parents have more positive learning experiences. This translates into better academic performance, higher grades and test scores. I know our parents can make this happen with a little help."

Here are tips on how busy parents can work smart:

- Send your child to school well-fed and rested.
- Stay on top of homework.
- Attend open house or back-to-school night at your child's school. It's the perfect time to meet your child's teacher. If you have to work, schedule a meeting with the teacher at another time.
- Go to parent-teacher conferences.
- Each day, ask your children what they are learning at school. Discuss it with them or have them explain it.
- Set high expectations for your children. Encourage them to do their best.
- Get involved in your school's parent-teacher organization, and find out other ways you can support your child's school.

Missouri parents offer their own advice on best practices. Kim Brand is the mother of a middle school student. She also taught elementary school for 22 years in a suburban school district. Family friends notice that Brandon and her daughter, Maggie, always work together as a team. They even tackle homework at the hair salon!

"I learned right away to be the best teacher you could be for your child at home," said Brand. "Don't ever stop working with your child. Anytime my daughter has homework, I am involved in it." Brand emphasizes that the effort comes with rewards. Maggie now carries a 4.0 grade point average.

Another mom, Leslie Smith, encourages parents to establish ongoing communication with their children. Kids will talk to me before they will talk to their mom or dad," Smith stated. "They are afraid to talk to their parents." Smith says it is important that parents listen to their kids.

Dee Crump has the experience of being a mother, a grandmother, and a foster mom. She says that when she was raising her own children, her job made it difficult for her to be active in school.

Nevertheless, Crump emphasizes, "You definitely need to develop a relationship with the teacher. Let the teacher know that you really care about your child's education."
Crump, who is proud of her adult kids, now raises two foster children.

Bottom line: When parents are involved in their children's education, kids do better in school.

Football!

Yea! Football season is finally here! It is our five-year-old's first year playing flag football. We are so excited to watch him! He has been talking about this all summer!

I tell ya, there is some serious planning before we can even get out the door, though. Knowing that we are going to spend all day at the fields, we have to pack the coolers, bring the lawn chairs, get everyone dressed and ready, set the house alarm system (click here for more), and head out the door before 9:00 a.m. It is quite the task for all five of us, but we love it!

This past weekend was his first game, and he did great! He is still learning the rules of the game, but he had such an awesome time. It is so fun to see all of the little guys out there chasing one another. Sometimes they were running in the right direction, and sometimes they weren't. You couldn't help but laugh and cheer for them anyway. He and his friends even do a touchdown dance in the end zone.

What a great memory! I can't wait to watch him again next week!

Mother Teresa, 'A Gift for God'

One of the people I admire is Mother Teresa. She led a selfless life of a servant and inspired many. Over the years, she witnessed horrific poverty, suffering, and death.

Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata, India in 1950. For some 45 years, she toiled among the poor and mentored other nuns. Much of her work was in Calcutta. Her order worked in more than 25 countries throughout the world.

One of my favorite Mother Teresa quotes comes from her book of prayers and meditations, titled A Gift for God:

Put yourself completely under the influence of Jesus, so that he may think his thoughts in your mind, do his work through your hands, for you will be all-powerful with him to strengthen you.

Mother Teresa won the Nobel Peace prize in 1979.

I've been publishing on this site for a few years, writing about education, business, technology, and current events. This blog continues to be a work in progress and reflects my eclectic interests.

In 2010, you'll likely see a more personal side of me. So who exactly is Deb?

I’m a writer whose world historically has revolved around her work and children. My personality is complex, according to those close to me. I’d like to think I’m perceptive. Others may argue convincingly that I’m from another planet!

I possess two distinct personalities. One side of me wears my heart on my sleeves. The other side, which I try to keep hidden, may chew you up and spit you out, if provoked.

On some occasions, I've been accused of being an ice princess. To others, I'm the girl who wants to save the world. I imagine that the real me is somewhere in between.

I learned a very important lesson when I was small: It's up to me to believe in myself. It would be a lesson I would pass on to my children and a key to my own survival in the rat race.

Visions of France and Italy

My husband loves to travel. He began acting on his love for faraway places as a young adult. We've been married only a few months, and I realize that I have a lot of catching up to do!

Hubby knows that one of my dreams is to go to France. Neither of us is into the traditional tourist sites, so a bed and breakfast just might foot the bill.

When it comes to accommodations, first on my list would be Apartment Paris. We've discovered BedAndBreakfastParis, an online site for booking apartments in this romantic city.

The home to the Eiffel Tower is not the only place we would like to visit. When I think of Apartment Cannes, I envision luxury accommodations -- perhaps a villa with a wonderful view of the sea. I hear the the south of France is just beautiful.

One of my biggest pet peeves is receiving urban legends and hoaxes via email. My favorite site to use in researching such stories is Snopes.com.

Snopes has compiled it's "25 Hottest Urban Legends." According to the website, Barack Obama, cell phones, and missing child alerts are among the current hot topics.

Talking to your children about Haiti

When catastrophic events happen, such as the recent earthquake in Haiti, children often turn to their parents for explanations and reassurance. The Father Factor, which is published by the National Father Initiative, offers constructive tips on how to get the conversation started.

Venezuela's Chavez threatens Toyota, GM

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez is threatening to expel international automakers, according to the Wall Street Journal. Chavez specifically targeted Japanese carmaker Toyota. The Venezuelan president was also critical of Fiat SpA of Italy, which controls Chrysler Group LLC, and General Motors Co.

Reuters reports that Chávez, threatening the auto manufacturers with nationalization, accused Asian and U.S. carmakers of refusing to share technology with the locals. Chávez ordered an investigation into Toyota operations.

Schools offer fewer computer science classes

Fewer students seem be interested in computer science courses, and some educators worry that future employees may lack essential skills for the workplace. These same young people, who know their way around the Internet and social networking sites, may not know how computers and the Web actually work.

Why the concern? A survey by the Computer Science Teachers Association reveals that the number of schools offering introductory or advanced computer science courses has declined since 2005. The website CSEdweek.org explains why computer science education is important:

Native Americans win $3.4 billion settlement

The U.S. government has agreed to pay $3.4 billion to settle a class-action lawsuit for mismanagement of trust fund accounts held by hundreds of thousands of Native Americans. The settlement ends a 13-year legal battle to resolve a dispute that dates back to the late-1800s.

The agreement ends the case brought by Native American tribes charging that the Interior Department had swindled hundreds of thousands of Indians out of royalties for leasing their lands to mining, timber, and energy interests. The lead plaintiff in the suit filed in 1996 is Elouise Cobell, a member of the Blackfeet Indian tribe in the western state of Montana.

Government drops request for telcom data

The federal government has agreed to drop a request for sensitive revenue and Internet speed data from telecommunication providers. The information would have been for a program to map broadband use in U.S. homes and bring high-speed Internet service to more people.

The U.S. Commerce Department said that companies such as Verizon Communications Inc, Comcast Corp, and AT&T Inc do not have to share how much money they make from each Internet subscriber. Nor must they say how fast their Internet connections typically run.

Instead, they will provide data by the block, usually about a dozen homes depending on the size of the block. They also will share the speed of Internet service that they advertise.

Companies do not want to share the specific data because they do not want their competitors to see it.

However, critics of the Commerce Department's decision maintain that failing to make the data public allows the companies to advertise -- and charge for -- something that they often cannot deliver.

Enjoying the outdoors

I recently became engaged to a man who loves the outdoors. From the time he was a kid, DJ has been a water/boat kind of guy. One of my favorite photos of DJ shows him flashing a big smile as he relaxes in his canoe. All is right with the world when my guy is near the water.

Hiking is also in DJ's blood. He has an adventurous nature and is always up for exploring a new trail.

Right now, I'm on a mission -- easing DJ out of some of his frayed shirts and pants. He's overdue for some new sportswear. His hiking shoes are also starting to show signs of wear. An outdoorsman needs clothing that's comfortable and stands up to the elements. At the same time, I want my guy to look good.

A few days ago, I discovered the Columbia Sportswear website, and I was impressed with the extensive product line. I found shoes and clothing that are both functional and fashionable. There's something unsettling about having crime lab guys in your house, dusting for fingerprints. I had that experience a few years ago when someone broke into my home. They stole a brand-new appliance, my computer, and a few other items. While I am grateful that police showed up promptly after I called them, it was hard to settle down after they left. My sense of security was gone.

My next door neighbor never had this problem. For years, she had had a home alarm system. Both of us were single mothers. I mistakenly thought that alarm systems were for other people. It was only afterward that I realized that I had been living with a false sense of security.

Several of my close friends and relatives installed home alarms, and they have never regretted it. My brother-in-law Hal is a perfect example. For 12 years, my family and I lived in a bungalow a few miles north of the city. I liked the community because it was quiet. A lot of retired people lived in the neighborhood, so I felt it had a lot of stability.

Protect your home while away on vacation

It's June, and if you're like me, your mind is on that summer getaway. If you're headed out of town, do your best to burglar-proof your home while you're away.

Here is a checklist recommended by many police departments:

Stop mail and newspapers, or ask a trusted neighbor to get them every day.
Put timers on several household lights.
Arrange to have grass mowed while gone.
Be cautious about whom you tell about your departure.
Make sure that everything is locked and secure. Double-check sheds, windows, garage doors and basement windows.
An unanswered phone might tip off a prowler that no one is home. Turn off the ringer and don't mention your departure on the answering machine.
Leave on an outdoor light with a motion sensor.
Remove all "secret" keys from outside. Leave blinds and curtains in normal positions wherever possible, taking care not to expose many valuables.
Stow valuables (important papers, jewelry, etc.) in a home safe or safe-deposit box.
Activate the alarm system and notify the security company about your vacation.

Do everything you can to give the illusion that someone is at home.

Most states agree to push for common college standards

An aggressive timetable by most 46 states calls for college standards to be drafted and ready for public review by July, and grade-by-grade standards by year’s end. After a meeting in April, each state signed a memorandum of agreement committing to the process and development of voluntary, common standards. Four states are not on board -- Alaska, Missouri, South Carolina, and Texas.

Once the standards are agreed to, it will be up to the states to get them adopted. The signed memo requires that the common core must represent at least 85 percent of a state’s standards, and that the common core needs to be adopted within three years.

My friend Jim is a son any parent would love to have. Each year, Jim treats his parents to a nice vacation. A couple of years ago, he chose Alaska as the destination.

Jim and his parents brought back amazing photographs and stories about their experiences. In fact, Jim is so big on Alaska travel, that he made a return trip the following year.

Travel Alaska. Those words stayed on my mind a couple of days ago when the temperature outside was in the upper 80s and the air conditioning had quit in my office. Hanging out in the "Land of the Midnight Sun" would have been perfect that day!

On any given day, Alaska's Denali National Park has much to offer – stunning mountain views, peaceful waters, and plenty of wildlife. It’s no wonder that Denali considered the “crown jewel” of America’s national park system. Tops on my must-see list would be a presentation on Alaska’s amazing Northern Lights.

When it comes to Denali tours, there are lots of options. For instance, you might decide to spend your time hiking, camping, or going on guided ATV and bus tours. If you have a fascination with Alaskan huskies – and who doesn’t? – you'll want to a personal tour of the Iditarod Race Dog Kennel. My kids would really love THAT experience.

Alaska boasts a rich history and colorful heritage. I just learned that the state has five distinct groups of Native Alaskan people. As a student of culture, I want to learn about each one.

When it comes to wildlife, there is much to see. Nearly 175 species of birds and 40 species of animals call Denali Park home. I can understand why my friend Jim decided that one trip to Alaska wasn’t enough.

Ready to take off on a summer vacation? If your trip takes you outside of the U.S., there are some new rules to keep in mind.

Starting Monday, June 1, passengers will need passports for air, land, and sea travel to and from Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.

If you're remaining in the U.S., don't forget that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently implemented stricter rules for traveler IDs. You have to make your reservation using the full name that you have on your government-issued ID card -- for instance, your driver's license.

More teachers are using social networks or text messages to keep in touch with students and build rapport, but online friendships may be considered inappropriate. Some officials are considering banning online "fraternization" between teachers and students.

The Missouri Legislature is debating a proposal to ban elementary-school teachers from having social networking friendships with their students. And the Lamar County School District board in Mississippi recently passed a policy that bans "fraternization via the Internet" between staff members and students. It also prohibits text messages to students except for educational purposes.

Thoughts on flags and patriotism

I have a great deal of respect for people who display a flag in front of their homes on holidays. Ever since I was a little girl, I would pay attention to the proudly displayed banners. Perhaps that’s because my parents made a point of visiting our family cemetery on Memorial Day, where I saw even more flags waving in the wind.

I have a great deal of respect for the military men and women who serve our country, and I think American flags and patriotic banners are a great way to honor them. “Support our Troops” banners are very popular. Some people choose the ones that have the yellow ribbons. “Happy Birthday America” banners seem to be perfect for Independence Day celebrations.

When it comes to banners, the only ones I don’t care for are the Confederate ones – for obvious reasons. Personally, I fail to see the connection between Confederate displays and patriotism. However, that’s a discussion for another day.

According to the United States Flag Store, nylon is the most popular fabric for American flags. I can see why. Nylon flags are strong and durable. They hold up well under all weather conditions, and they are less likely to fade.

I loved flags as a child, and I love them now. However, when I was in high school and college, I faced some personal conflicts about the American flag and what it represented. Like many young people of my generation, I was torn up about many of the wars that the U.S. supported. In addition, I was disappointed to see our country's displays of arrogance when it came to our relationships with other countries.

I may not have always liked some of the behaviors I saw in our leaders – or some of the biases perpetuated against certain ethnic groups. Still, the U.S. has come a long way since it first declared its independence. We’ve shown a great capacity to change – and to pull together in times of crisis.

The phrase “we, the people” has taken on a much more significant meaning. I am proud to be an American.

Obama picks shuttle veteran to be NASA chief

'Wardrobe malfunction' case could still mean fine for CBS

The CBS television network could once again face a fine for the wardrobe malfunction involving Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show.

The Federal Communications Commission wanted to fine CBS $550,000 for the incident, which lasted 9/16 of a second, but a federal appeals court decided to set the fine aside. On Monday, however, the Supreme Court sent the case back to the appeals court.

The Supreme Court's decision means that TV stations and networks once again face the specter of fines for even fleeting, one-time slip-ups.

This is the second time in two weeks that the Supreme Court ruled on lewd behavior or language on TV. In a case last week, the Supreme Court ruled that regulators can fine television and radio broadcasters for letting "fleeting expletives" slip through. Acting FCC Chairman Michael Copps called the ruling "a big win for America's families."

Flu fears impact college graduation on many campuses

Northeastern University in Boston dropped the traditional handshake for graduating students accepting diplomas, while Cisco Junior College in Texas cancelled its commencement ceremonies altogether.

Coast to coast, fears of the H1N1 flu strain are altering American campus life in both subtle and dramatic ways after a dozen universities reported probable or confirmed cases of the virus that has killed up to 176 people in Mexico and one in the United States.

School officials say there is good reason for their concern -- from the hectic travel schedules of academics who could transport the swine flu virus, to the ever-present risk in densely populated residence halls of flu spreading like wildfire.

Many schools such as Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, Western Illinois University and Tulane University in New Orleans suspended study-abroad programs in Mexico. Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania will hold a separate graduation for students returning from Mexico.

In Boston, when about 20,000 people gathered on Friday for Northeastern's graduation events, the school did not take any chances. About 100 bottles of hand sanitizer were available to the crowd and the officials handing out diplomas were not shaking hands -- a traditional graduation gesture.

Northeastern officials said that they took their cue from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

Cisco Junior College cancelled a graduation ceremony scheduled for Friday and instead plans to mail diplomas to graduates.

Keyless locks: Do they offer better security?

Fingerprint have been used as a means of identification for well over century. In more recent years, with advances technology have made it possible to automate fingerprint recognition. As a result, keyless locks are now available for business and home use.

Recently, I’ve been wondering if keyless locks would fit into my lifestyle. I’m thinking about the many times my kids have misplaced their keys. It’s annoying – and at times a bit scary – but I try not to fuss too much. Why? Because by the time I reached 20, my dad has four sets of locks to our home! Every time I lost my keys, my dad replaced the locks to the front door.

So there is a practical component for considering keyless locks. If we had a security system that recognized fingerprints, we wouldn’t have to worry about lost keys. Our home would be more secure, right? Maybe.

Not having to worry about keys anymore is an attractive idea. It would be cool for my family to use our unique fingerprints to get into our home. However, another thought persists in the back of my mind.

While the technological advance is wonderful, I think we have to assume that there are unscrupulous people out there who are thinking of ways to beat the system. Even with the best safeguards, I think it is possible for someone to unscrupulously obtain -- and illegally use -- my fingerprint. I’m no expert in this area, mind you, but it stands to reason that use of biometrics, while it offers many advantages, presents another possible method of identity theft.

We don’t live in a perfect world. But I do believe some methods of home security are worth considering. The corporate sector and law enforcement are finding success with this technology.

These days, traditional keys seem to be so “old school”. Even though I have a lot of questions about keyless locks, I’d be willing to consider them as a way to better protect my family.

Intergenerational project honors preservationist

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) joins two other organizations in sponsoring a photo, essay, and poetry contest "that best expresses the Sense of Wonder that you feel for the sea, the night sky, forests, birds, wildlife, and all that is beautiful to your eyes." Generations United and Rachel Carson Inc. are co-sponsors. The contest honors Rachel Carson, the late preservationist and ecologist.

In her book The Sense of Wonder (written in the 1950s and published in a magazine in 1956), Carson used lyrical passages about the beauty of nature. She enjoyed helping children develop a sense of wonder and love of nature.

Prize: Publication on the websites of EPA Aging Initiative, Generations United, and Rachel Carson Council, Inc.

Eligibility: Entries must be joint projects involving a young person under 18 and someone aged 50 or older.

Landmark civil rights law in jeopardy?

U.S. Supreme Court conservatives today sharply criticized a central part of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that is aimed at more than a dozen states with a history of racial discrimination.

It is the second major race case heard by the justices since Barack Obama became America's first black president.

The justices seemed split along conservative and liberal lines in considering a provision applying to all or parts of 16 states, mostly in the South. It requires them to get federal government approval before changing their voting procedures.

Congress adopted the Voting Rights Act in 1965 to make it easier for people of color to exercise their right to vote.

Congress extended it in 2006 for 25 years, with then-President George W. Bush signing it into law.

Last week the justices considered whether race still can be used as a factor for job promotions and hirings, an issue that could affect millions of employers nationwide.

Opponents of the voting rights law argue that the protections for minority voters are no longer needed after more than 40 years of progress, and they cite Obama's election as evidence of how America has changed since 1965.

Defenders of the measure say minority voters still face discrimination in some local elections.

The legal challenge was brought by a Texas municipal utility district. It says it should be exempt from the law and that it should be struck down.

Sen. Arlen Specter to switch parties, become Democrat

This could be the political news of the day. The Washington Post is reporting that Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania intends to switch parties and become a Democrat. The switch puts Democrats closer to 60-vote control in the U.S. Senate.

Specter is a 79-year-old veteran of five Senate terms, and one of only a handful of moderate Republicans left in Congress in a party made up largely of conservatives. Click here for details.

Supreme Court upholds FCC expletives policy

The Supreme Court today upheld a policy by the Federal Communications Commission that prohibits the use of curse words during live TV broadcasts. The vote was close, 5-4.

The high court’s decision, which argued broadcasters can be fined for even single curse words used on live TV, throws out a ruling by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York in favor of a Fox Television-led challenge. The lower court had asked for a more detailed reasoning of the tougher stance on indecency.

Tthe court refused to pass judgment on whether the FCC's "fleeting expletives" policy is in line with First Amendment guarantees of free speech. The justices say a federal appeals court should weigh the constitutionality of the policy.

I can't imagine my life without my DVR (digital video recorder). My family and I are always on the go. We're often not at home when our favorite TV shows air.

I remember when I learned how to pause and rewind live TV. I thought it was so cool!
When my family made the move to Direct TV a while back, we quickly discovered that this satellite TV provider gave us a wider choice of programming than cable. I'm a news junkie, and I have access to all the major news networks. The local channels are included in our package at no extra charge.

My daughter's a big fan of reality television. She finds all of her shows on DirecTV -- programs like "Making the Band" and "Bad Girls Club". In fact, she keeps the DVR busy recording those shows. (I don't know how she can stand all that drama, but that's another post for another time.) While she's recording those programs, I make sure that I don't miss "Law and Order". I'm a huge fan of the entire franchise.

Direct T V is great for people who really value HD programming. We haven't invested in a plasma television set yet, but when we do, we know our viewing experience will get even better.

Hollywood and ISPs team up to deliver video over the Internet

DVD, DVR and VOD are old school. Now there's ZillionTV. The company, backed by several major Hollywood studios, is an ad-supported video-on-demand system in which commercials are tailored to viewers, who can't fast-forward through them.

ZillionTV enables viewers to choose the categories of advertising that are most interesting to them, and commercials fitting the bill are inserted into TV shows and movies that are streamed via broadband onto TV screens.

Content comes from Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, NBC Universal, 20th Century Fox Television and Disney, all of which are invested in this startup. Forty other partners also supply content, and discussions are under way with Viacom and CBS. ZillionTV is promising 15,000 movie and TV titles by the end of 2009, when such TV shows as 30 Rock and Smallville and movies like The Dark Knight will be available on demand.

The system features a rewards program: The more commercials watched, the more points earned. Users wishing to avoid the ads can buy or rent content in a way similar to iTunes and Apple TV.

ZillionTV, however, is for streaming only. Purchased content is stored via Internet "lockers," not on a hard drive.

ZillionTV hopes to do for the set-top box market what Hulu has done for the PC. If you're like a lot of us, you're trying to keep up with the technology.

Hulu, if you're not familiar with it, is an online video service that offers hit TV shows, movies and clips at Hulu.com and other online destination sites — all for free. The service is available only in the U.S.

Hulu brings together a large selection of videos from more than 130 content providers, including FOX, NBC Universal, MGM, Sony Pictures Television, and Warner Bros. Users can choose from more than 1000 current prime-time TV hits such as The Simpsons, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and The Office the morning after they air; classics like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The A Team; movies like Men in Black and The Karate Kid; and clips from popular shows of the past, such as Friends.

The backers of ZillionTV insist that they're offering a unique product. Once the service is operational, we'll get the opportunity to compare.
